One of these clinics is headed by Dr Dennis Chua, an ENT specialist in Singapore who is International Board Certified in Facial Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery. He is most skilful at improving the appearance of the nose and breathing.
Before undergoing a rhinoplasty, Dr Dennis Chua advises his patients about the dos and don’ts about what to happen before, during and after the surgery. One particular reminder that he gives to his patients is the food to be taken before and after the surgery. If you are planning to have a rhinoplasty and you love to eat, this article may be able to give information about the food to eat before and after rhinoplasty at an ENT clinic in Singapore.
Rhinoplasty in Singapore is one of the most common types of plastic surgery. As mentioned, it is a surgery to enhance the shape of the nose. Some people are not happy with the shape of their nose that is why they get rhinoplasty. Others had an injury, problem with breathing or it is a birth defect. In most ENT clinics in Singapore, rhinoplasty is mostly done to improve nose appearance, function and also for health purposes.
For you to be able to undergo rhinoplasty, your nasal bone needs to be fully grown. A 15-year-old girl can already have a rhinoplasty. However, if the reason for the surgery is breathing problems, it can be performed even at a younger age.
If you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty, the doctor will examine your medical history and ask about your medical condition. A physical exam will be made and a few lab tests. Your nose will be photographed as well for assessment purposes. The doctor will advise you on the dos and don’ts of the surgery. You will also be advised not to take ibuprofen or pain killers two weeks before the surgery and two weeks after. These medicines will make you bleed more and slow down the blood-clotting process. You will be asked if you are smoking because cigarettes slow the healing process. And the food you need to take before and after the surgery will be also discussed.
What food to eat before rhinoplasty
Other ENT clinics in Singapore will tell you that there is no particular food you should avoid before rhinoplasty. But for Dr Dennis Chua, the food that you eat before the surgery can contribute a lot in the whole process especially in recovering.
Typically, rhinoplasty surgery is scheduled months or weeks in advance. This is an advantage for you to prepare your body for the surgery by eating foods that are healthy to get the nutrients that your body needs for a fast recovery.
- Protein: Eat plenty of foods rich in protein. It helps create new collagen and blood cells. All the physical structures that need to be healed after rhinoplasty are made up of collagen. Foods like lean meat, poultry, eggs, fish, seeds, nuts, beans, legumes, dairy products like milk, yoghurt, and cheese.
- Fruits and Vegetables: When you undergo surgery, your body gets stressed and free radicals appear naturally. It can slow the healing process by damaging the tissues. So, you need to eat fruits and vegetables rich in vit. A and vit. C as well as manganese and selenium. Fruits and vegetables like banana, blackberries, avocado, grapefruit, kiwi, pineapples, spinach, papaya, mango and many more.
Also, do not forget to drink a lot of water. Drink at least 65-80 ounces of water a day.
What food to eat after rhinoplasty
After the surgery, eat soft foods that are easy to digest. Your body is stressed due to surgery which interferes with digestion. Foods like yoghurt, apple sauce, oatmeal, and scrambled eggs will help fill your stomach after surgery.
Foods like avocado, olive oil, and almond butter have anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce swelling. Also, fruits like cherries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries are antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory effects. So, you can eat theses fruits that can help with the healing process. Continue to drink plenty of water and eat rich in protein foods for faster recovery.
What food to avoid before and after the surgery
If there are allowed foods to eat before and after surgery, of course, there are also that needs to be avoided. Most ENT clinics in Singapore advise on minimizing salt, sugar and carbohydrates intake because it increases inflammation before rhinoplasty. Avoid also foods like eggplant, potatoes, garlic, tomatoes, and flaxseeds as it can interfere with blood clotting. The same food you should avoid after surgery. All vitamins and herbal supplements you are taking must need to eliminated also before surgery and you can only resume taking it 3 days after the rhinoplasty.
